Highlighter Review: Hourglass Ambient Metallic Strobe Lighting Palette

BEHOLD the Hourglass Ambient Metallic Strobe Lighting Palette
AvailabilityThis has been discontinued.
Would I buy this? Probably not given that the shades here aren't unique enough to pay the price of this palette for.
Notes: Alright so despite what I wrote about my motivations to purchase this palette if it were to ever relaunch I do have to say that the quality of the shades here is great - they're pigmented, have a soft metallic glow, and stay put all day.
Absolute Strobe Light - This is a pink champagne with an intense white frost.
Pure Strobe Light - This is a true white-ish champagne tone.
Lucent Strobe Light - This is a metallic soft amber.

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.

MAC Bare Study Pro Longwear Paint Pot Review

Hello folksickles, today I will be reviewing the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Bare Study
AvailabilityThese retail at $23 for 5g (0.17 oz.) and are available at maccosmetics.com, ulta.com, macys.com, bloomingdales.com, and nordstrom.com along with their physical store locations.
Would I buy this again? Yes.
Notes: This is a really nice, smooth, and very long-lasting (as in, the pot itself will last you a long time!) cream eyeshadow. It's pretty alone (although I find that it fades out to nothing by the end of several hours) and works well as a base for powder shadows.

Bare Study is described as a soft beige with gold pearl.  I'd have to agree with the description here - it's a really pretty light champagne tone. I really love this paint pot in particular because its soft shimmer makes it really pretty as a standalone quick, easy throw it on in the morning and it brightens your eyelids situation but works great as a base for powder shadows. In addition, this also works well as a nude shade on the waterline - I like the brightening and eye-opening effect it has, and it  also acts as a cute subtle face highlighter for fair skin-tones as well.
Now, in terms of wear-time; in the above photos I used this as a base for my eyeshadow over Urban Decay Primer Potion - although Paint Pots can be used as primer on their own I have reservations about my eyeshadow creasing and like to pair them with actual primers. As you may be able to see this shade didn't affect any of the eyeshadow colors or cause them to warp in any way (for reference I was using my Ben Nye Lumiere Grande Colour Palette). I'd say my shadow wore for around 6 hours before noticeable creasing began occurring in the inner corner crease region of the eye. Wear-time was pretty much all day on my waterline and lash line (although it's not a shade that really shows up on the lash line, I merely wore it to test wear time) with the exception of this having migrated closer to the lashes on the waterline and remained there.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

DisclaimerI paid for this myself.

Love It Or Leave It; Review 2.0: bh Cosmetics Take Me Back to Brazil Rio Edition Palette

Hello folksickles. As a makeup junkie and blogger you may have realized that I review a LOAD of eyeshadow palettes and I like to think of myself as being largely an eyeshadow junkie. In order to de-clutter a bit  I've decided to pick out a palette or series of eyeshadows for the month and have that be my monthly selection for those instances where I'm not doing a tutorial for the blog. Every month I'll do a recap on the eyeshadows - how I feel about them and whether I'll be keeping them or giving them away (and why :P) as well as if I think it's worth its price tag. Yes there's two a month now! I figured maybe I could get through more this way :D

You can find a tutorial I did for this palette here and these are the looks I created this month:

So as you can see I created a bunch of fun colorful looks. Although it's hard for me to pass this on because it's so pretty, colorful, and hearkens back to my days of loving the 88 Ultra Shimmer Palette (the OG one from back in 2009-2010) I just know that when it comes to colorful shadows I most likely would reach for my other palettes before I went to this and I just want to pass it along to someone who would give it some love. In terms of subjectively - this palette has good pigmentation/vibrancy and the shades are easy to blend. Its main downfall lays in the fact that there are no mattes.

Disclaimer: This was a gift from my wife.

Departures - October 2019

Ok folksickles. Departure blogs will contain items that aren't empties but that are going to be given away for one reason or another. I'm working hard to curate my makeup collection and want it to include only the products that I think truly work well, that I reach for often and do what they're supposed to do.
1. ColourPop Mar Shadow Palette: This is a lovely, well-made, great-quality palette but I just genuinely don't see myself reaching for it very often. I'm unsure if I feel that it lacks variety or that it just is too neutral with only pops of color. Frankly I'm concerned with testing the rest of the 9-pan monochromatic palettes - which I've been hoarding this year like mad - in terms of me perhaps feeling that there's not a good shade variety in them due to their monochromatic nature. I suppose we shall find out.

2. wet n wild Color Icon Unicorn Glow Rainbow Highlighter: Technically there's nothing wrong with this product - it goes on smooth, is well-pigmented, stays put all day... it's WAY too pigmented for fair skin-tones - it doesn't look like a highlight on me but like I dumped shimmer shadow on my cheeks. For this reason I will be passing it along.

3. StriVectin Anti-Wrinkle blurFECTOR for Eyes: This is meant to be an under-eye and eyelid primer but I found that my concealer went on pretty much just the same over it and that my eyeshadow creased with this on so it didn't really do very much for me.

4. Becca Champagne Pop Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed: This is a beautiful golden highlight that stays put all day. Unfortunately this is slightly too dark for my skin-tone and oftentimes has the effect of making me look like a pretty buttery glazed carrot. For this reason I will be passing this along to a tanner friend.

5. Deborah Lippmann Skinny Dippin' Gel Lab Pro Nail Polish: This is a really pretty purple-y grey but unfortunately it didn't really stay put on my nails very well.

6. L'Oreal RoseTrue Match Lumi Powder Glow Illuminator: This is a beautiful highlighter that stays put all day but I just feel like it's not unique to my collection and like I wouldn't (and I currently don't) reach for this very often.

Disclaimer: I purchased all that you see above with the exception of the wet n wild highlighter, which my wife got for me. The StriVectin and Becca products were provided for testing purposes. I am under no obligation to mention them on this blog.

Arrivals - October 2019

Ok folksickles! Arrivals feature items I bought this month that are joining my collection; a haul if you will. Without further ado:

1.  ColourPop Galore because that's what I spent my birthday money on:
Sol Palette
Main Squeeze Palette
Head in the Clouds Face Milk Set

2.Kim Chi Chic: So miss Kim Chi launched a makeup line this month and her makeup is always poppin so you know, I figured I'd try it. Also, little know fact (at least publicly) about me - I'm immature and laugh profusely at potty humor so for her to call these things "sharts" - I had to have them!
Rainbow Sharts Palette
Diamond Sharts 04 - Raise the Curtain

3. Deborah Lippmann Natural Mystic Gel lab Pro Set: This set includes 6-shades of really pretty purples and a pink  that I thought would be nice for the fall season.

4. Lune + Aster PowerLips Quickstick Lipstick in Squad: This is such a pretty light, nude-leaning pink. It's everything I wish MAC's Creme Cup was because it's a pretty light color but it doesn't bleed into the surface of my lips and make them look weird.

5. Sheet Masks Galore: So I noticed my stash was running a bit low and went nuts as I always do. I purchased the following:
A'Pieu Chocolate Milk Air Pocket Sheet

October 2019 Favorites

Hey folksickles,
Alright, all the goodies I've been enjoying in the month of October :)

1. ColourPop Strawberry Shake Palette: So I know it may be strange to see a pink eyeshadow palette pop up in my favorites because, if you follow this blog for any length of time, you know that my wearing of pinks and reds is seldom and nearly nonexistent. That said, my bestie just kind of talked me into getting more into pinks and reds; and one of my coworkers keeps saying how they bring out the green in my eyes (hello there hint of hazel!) that I kind of gave in - when my wife asked what I wanted for my birthday I told her I was eyeing this. Now what I love about this palette is that, although it's monochromatic - it's very versatile. I adored both Woke and Paper Straw as transitional shades in the crease - they gave a beautiful blended out depth but weren't your typical warm brown or orange. Berry Fine is just an absolutely gorgeous lid shade! Plus nearly all the shades can double as blush (depending on your skin-tone) and Delish makes a fun highlight.

2. ColourPop Sol Palette: It's so funny how I'm falling in love with really warm pink-toned palettes given my love of teals and blues (as you know), greens, violets... yet here we are. I fully blame my best friend because every time I'd send him photos of this and the strawberry palettes he'd heart react to them and encourage me to get them so here we are. This palette makes it into favorites because it is quality - the colors here are smooth, buttery, well-pigmented; they all play well together. Not only that but the palette is incredibly versatile in that you can create really soft, subtle, everyday looks with it but you can also do bright, intense looks and even softly smoky looks with the browns in the palette. When I purchase this I was anticipating that I'd create bright pinky looks with it but I had no idea that the looks I created with it could be so soft, versatile, and flattering. I am genuinely excited to use this palette every time I pick it up and I NEVER thought I'd say that about a palette that wasn't genuinely neutral unless it had a pop of blue in it.

3. ColourPop Ultra Blotted Lip in Doozy: I am really loving both the formula and color of this lip product. Firstly the formula goes on like a liquid and starts off kind of like the YSL Glossy Stain in that it's comfortably hydrating and sheer at first but can be layered to achieve a more pigmented look - this dries a bit powdery but I don't find it drying - although if your lips are flakey this can certainly exacerbate texture. I also find this color super flattering for fall because it's this beautiful pink terracotta - because it's so warm it actually transitions really nicely from summer to the fall in that, when paired with more summery hues it goes a bit more coral whereas paired with more autumnal looks it leans a bit more terracotta. That said, I think it would be a really great shade for any time of year.

4. ColourPop Just a Tint Lip Crayon in Chubby Bunny: Ok can you tell that I've been playing with my ColourPop stash? I promise that I purchased every single one of these items (excluding the Strawberry Shake which was a birthday present from the wife) and this is no way sponsored (although hey, if they want to add me to their PR I will not complain). Anyways, when it comes to this lip crayon I genuinely look forward to the balm step of my makeup routine because that means I get to put this on - it's super comfortably hydrating, non-sticky, and gives a pretty hint of color. My favorite thing, outside of the texture, about Chubby Bunny is that while bubblegum pinks can be hard to pull of, the sheerness here lends it to being really soft and pretty.

5. Adventure Time: I am currently done with the show and I AM SO SAD. The way it ended - so tragic, so beautiful, so lovely how it all came together in the end. Was I an ugly crying wreck? Oh you best believe! I knew I would cry - in fact a lot of the time I get home, eat dinner, and then go wash my makeup off but I knew the day I set out to watch the finale that I needed to wash my makeup off first because I would cry my eyes out and there I was, emotional wreck. It's a beautiful, heartwarming show and I highly recommend watching it!

Disclaimer: My wife bought me the ColourPop Strawberry Shake palette for my birthday. Everything else mentioned here was paid for by yours truly.

October 2019 Empties

All my garbage of the month! :D
Sheet Masks Galore:
innisfree my real squeeze mask in cucumber: This left my skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed. It hydrates very lightly which I enjoy.
innisfree Skin Solution Mask in Beta Glucan: This mask left my skin feeling very silky and hydrated.
innisfree my real squeeze mask in acai berry: I really love how hydrating this mask is - it left my skin feeling very soft and smooth while looking dewy, plump, and radiant. I also love that it smells like a berry milkshake.
innisfree my real squeeze mask in rice x2: This is a fantastic hydrating, nourishing mask that leaves my skin feeling very soft and smooth.
lune +aster 5 minute rescue mask in Nourish: This mask smells really yummy and does a wonderful job of leaving my skin leaving soft and smooth - honestly I think it's the very best mask in the lune+aster line and the only one I'd consider purchasing again. Although given that the rest of the masks I review are in the $2-3 range and this one is a whopping $8 I can't make any promises.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Tomato: This mask is absolutely fantastic - it left my skin feeling very smooth and supple while giving me a nice, light hydration.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Rose: This mask has a beautiful rose scent and left my skin feeling hydrated and smooth.
lune+aster 5 minute rescue mask in Firm: I wanted to love this like I loved the Nourish but I found it to be just ok. It hydrates lightly but I wasn't blown away by the results.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Orange: This mask has a really nice citrusy scent and left my skin feeling hydrated and looking radiant.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Royal Jelly: This mask has a really nice light honey scent and left my skin feeling hydrated and looking radiant.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Cucumber: This mask has a really nice light refreshing scent and left my skin feeling hydrated and soft.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Olive: This mask has a somewhat sweet scent and left my skin feeling super hydrated and silky. I love this one so much just because my face feels like butter after having used it.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Bamboo: This mask has a really nice light refreshing scent and left my skin feeling hydrated and soft.
Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet in Tea Tree: I'm surprised and pleased that this mask didn't dry out my skin at all but rather, left it feeling soft and smooth while giving my skin a nice clarity and bringing all the crap clogging my pores to the surface. I also appreciate that it doesn't have a super strong tea tree scent.

2. Natura Bisse Diamond Cocoon Sheer Eye: I find that this hydrates the under-eye nicely while also providing a tint that brightens the eye area - I feel like I use less concealer when I use this because it gives a little coverage.

3Eucerin Skin Calming Daily Moisturizing Cream x2: This is a really lightweight moisturizer, I personally feel like it doesn't do enough for me.

4. NARS Audacious Lipstick: Given that I'm unsure of the names of the sample shades I have remaining I don't want to guess which one this might be but it's a soft nude. Frankly I didn't think I'd like it on but found it to be a nice soft shade.

5. M-61 Hydraboost Cream: I'm sad to have used up another one of these - I love the texture on this - it's pillow-y and kind of whipped without being heavy yet provides loads of hydration.

6Dr. Barbara Sturm Brightening Face Cream: Frankly I didn't find this to have any effect on increasing radiance in my skin. I feel that it's a bit too heavy for my skin.

7. Dr. Barbara Sturm Facial ScrubThis is a lightly exfoliating physical scrub. It's alright but given its high price point I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase it. Frankly I'm kind of over physical scrubs as I find the vast majority of them to be too abrasive for my skin, I prefer scrubs that you massage into the skin and that cause the excess to peel off.

8. Revive Moisturizing Renewal Cream SPF 15: This moisturizer is so wonderfully lightweight while being hydrating. I love how well it sinks into my skin and that, although it contains SPF, it isn't sticky or heavy. I'm so sad to have used this up because it's so pricey and I can't just go and buy it.

9. Secret Shower Fresh Deodorant: I feel like I went through this very quickly! After using a natural deodorant that gave me quite the rash this summer this deodorant was a welcome reprieve - natural though it is not, this keeps me dry and rash-free.

10. Miche Bloomin' Glamorous Line Lashes in No.29 Glamorous Sexy x2: To be fair I used up two pairs in September and two pairs on October, although I didn't mention this in my September empties post. I find this lashes a bit too natural for me and because they're very short toward the inside of the eye I find it difficult to fix the lash band being wonky in that area - typically if a lash is longer I can sort of manipulate it to stick where I want it to but these were somewhat annoying to work with.

11Odacite Bioactive Rose Gommage: I'm still unsure with this product what it's meant to do or how it's meant to be used. I thought this whole time you put it on, wait for it to get kind of tacky and then roll it off like you would with those chemical exfoliators I mentioned earlier that I liked. Oh and rose scented! I was excited. But I'm not really sure that this exfoliates - it does leave my skin feeling very soft and smooth after I wash it off so there's that, but I don't get any skin flakies balling off the skin.

12. Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Aging Body Cream: I think this cream smells really nice but it's not hydrating enough for me. Given how expensive this is I expected it to make my skin feel brand new.

13. Dove Go Fresh Pomegranate & Lemon Verbena Scent Body Wash: I really love the way this body wash smells - I just wish it was slightly more hydrating. I use this to shave with and I think it's great for that.

14. R+Co Balloon Dry Volume Spray: Frankly I'm surprised by how well this works because I really didn't think it would do anything for my hair - it gives a really fantastic boost of volume to the hair while being essentially weightless.

15.innisfree pore clearing clay mask with super volcanic clusters: Alright so I really liked that this mask made my skin feel deeply cleansed without drying it out but I also didn't find that it cleared or unplugged my pores in any way which was ultimately disappointing.

16. Indie Lee Superfruit Facial Cream: I really liked this moisturizer because it's deeply hydrating and smells delicious! It has a really yummy citrusy scent.

17. Tree Hut Bohemian Escape Shea Sugar Scrub in Turmeric: As we all know these are my favorite body scrubs - really grainy and super exfoliating.

18. Eau Thermale Avene Physiolift Eyes: This is a really great lightweight under-eye cream.

19. HUM Daily Cleanse: Although this is in no means super intense I find that it does keep you... very regular... if you catch my drift. I didn't really see a big improvement in my skin with these supplements though but I'd assume it would take longer than a three-day sample pack to see results.

20. Guerlain Light Lingerie De Peau BB Cream: Six years after falling deeply in love with this wondrous product I am now completely out of it. This stayed put and wasn't heavy in high humidity environments (Puerto Rico for instance), gave my skin great coverage, had a pretty dewy finish to it... I got so many compliments on my skin when I wore it. I'm so sad that it's gone.

21. Lash Star Visionary Lash Adhesive: This is a pretty good run-of-the-mill lash glue - does the job of gluing my lashes on and keeping them in place.

22.Revive Intensite de Yeux Firming Eye Cream: I really enjoyed the texture of this eye cream - it's very lightweight yet hydrating and it did a great job at reducing puffiness around the eye area.

23. Sigma E40 Brush (synthetic): This is a really great blending brush for the crease area or for fluffing setting powder under the eye area, precise highlight application, blending out concealer... heck it's very multipurpose but unfortunately I've had mine for years and it's falling apart at the ferule.

24. NYX Epic Ink Liner: You folks... this is by far one of the worst liquid liners I have EVER used. Like, I cannot in good conscious suggest this to anyone but to people who have wronged me terribly - that's how bad it is. I had this eyeliner for three months and for some god forsaken reason was determined to make it work, to believe that at some point it would dry out, just a little... You see, the formula is too wet, it gets into every tiny little fold in the eye and bleeds. To be honest I really hate how crummy the formula is because the brush itself is precise, flexible, and overall easy to use.

25. Laura Mercier Caviar Volume Mascara: This is a really great volumizing mascara, I really enjoyed using it.

26. Bath & Body Works Tiki Shore Antibacterial Hand Gel: I really loved this hand sanitizer in particular because it smells like my beloved Tiki Beach candle.

27. Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Conditioner: I've been wanting to try this for ages and I really enjoyed it. This gives the hair a lot of silkiness and hydration without being heavy or weighing it down.

28. Christian Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation in 1CR: I really loved the coverage and glow this foundation gave me but unfortunately it's somewhat too dark for me - it sort of worked in the summertime but even so I find this slightly oxidizes to a darker shade.

29. Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in Pear & Chia Seed: This scrub smells so delicious! It's fruity and sweet without being cloying and, as you folks know, I love how gritty and exfoliating it is.

30. Everyday Minerals All Over Shimmer in Sunny: I used this all over my face as a setting powder although, honestly, it should've mostly stayed as an under-eye setting powder. This gives the skin a really beautiful lovely glow which looks nice in real life but has the tendency to want to look kind of oily on camera/in photographs.

31. Dove Sensitive Skin Nourishing Body Wash: This really came in handy for several reasons - because it's getting colder, and therefore drier, this does a wonderful job of being a moisturizing alternative to a shave gel - which is mainly what I used it for. But in addition, I got my very first tattoo in early September and this was a fantastic soap to wash it with because it's hypoallergenic and has no fragrances, alcohol, or soap but is, as I mentioned, hydrating which helped take the itch out.

32. Klorane Ultra Nourishing Body Lotion with organic Cupuacu Butter: Honestly with a name like "ultra nourishing" I was expecting heavy hydration which I felt that this didn't particularly provide. It was a bit too light for my liking.

33. Pampers Baby Wipes: I use these to wipe down counter-tops and my makeup items - I like that they're unscented and gentle.

34. Chantecaille Lip Chic Lipstick in Camellia: I found this to be just ok - I like that it's hydrating but it doesn't stay on the mouth for anything over an hour and at $38 I think it's too expensive to be wearing off so quickly.

35. Bite Beauty Chai Amuse Bouche Lipstick: I didn't use this up so much as it went missing at work. Seeing as how I was nearing the end of it though I'm not too heartbroken. This lipstick is quite odd in the sense that some days when I wore it, it would look super brown while other days it was kind of a reddish terracotta. 🤨

36. Revive Intensite Complete Anti-Aging Eye Serum: This is a really liquid-y, lightweight yet hydrating eye serum - I found that it really brightened (because of the pearl it contains) and de-puffed my under-eye area.

37Korres Pure Greek Olive Body Cream in Sea Salt: I really liked its mild scent and nice hydrating ability - it was lightweight yet did a good job hydrating my legs - although like most things it didn't do much for the soles of my feet, which need help the most.

38. Laura Mercier Ambre Vanille Eau Gourmande: As you folks know, this is one of my absolute favorite fragrances especially as the weather gets colder because it's so wonderfully cozy. I am so sad to have used it all up.

39. Christophe Robin Delicate Volumizing Shampoo With Rose Extracts: This is a relatively gentle shampoo that's lightweight and leaves the hair feeling soft and hydrated. It has a floral rose scent and I find that it does give me a bit of a boost with volume.

40. Trader Joe's Lemon Verbena Triple Milled Soap: This soap smells delicious and performs really well in terms of me having washed mostly just my hands with it.

Disclaimer: I purchased all of the above with the exception of the Natura Bisse,  NARS. Dr. Barbara Sturm, Revive, Odacite, Avene, Hum, R+Co, innisfree (just the volcanic mask), Laura Mercier, HUM, Bumble & Bumble, Dior, Klorane, Chantecaille, Christophe Robin, and m-61 products. The Korres product was a gift from my bestie.
